Assessment Measures

Assessment measures and therapeutic modalities we use

We use gold standard assessment measures and tools for diagnostics, such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale (ADOS) and the Wechsler Intelligence Scales for example.  We only use reliable and validated psychometric tools which are aligned to internationally recognised methods of categorising mental illness; the International Classification of Diseases, version 10 (ICD-10) or the Diagnostic Statistical Manual, version 5 (DSM-IV) such as Millon Multiaxial Clinical Inventory, version 4 (MCMI-IV) for example.

Our main treatment modality is cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), which is often the treatment of choice for a range of common psychological difficulties.  A new wave of therapies including Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) involve more emotional focused coping techniques and draw on ancient Eastern philosophy.  We tailor the treatment modality to the presenting issues, assessment findings, and your requirements to create a treatment package that is flexible and wholly responsive to your needs.

Anxiety UK recommends the apple technique in triggering situations:

APPLE

Acknowledge the uncertainty as it comes to mind.
Pause – Don’t react as you normally do. Don’t react at all. Just pause and breath.
Pull back – Tell yourself this is just the worry talking, and this apparent need for certainty is not helpful and not necessary. It is only a thought or feeling. Don’t believe everything you think. Thoughts are not statements or facts.
Let go – Let go of the thought or feeling. It will pass. You don’t have to respond to them. You might imagine them floating away in a bubble or cloud.
Explore – Explore the present moment, because right now, in this moment, all is well. Notice your breathing and the sensations of your breathing. Notice the ground beneath you. Look around and notice what you see, what you hear, what you can touch, what you can smell. Right now. Then shift your focus of attention to something else – on what you need to do, on what you were doing before you noticed the worry, or do something else – mindfully with your full attention.
