Family Psychology Services

We provide support to all ages within the family group, however, if you are not sure about what you need, make sure to contact us direct for help and advice.

Infancy and Early Childhood

Problems that arise in early childhood may be indicative of underlying conditions or emerging pathologies.  Challenges or delays in developmental milestones are of note, as well as any difficulties associated with feeding, sleeping, toileting, attachments, trauma, intellectual and neuro difficulties, and general behavioural or conduct problems.  Assessment and intervention at this stage is primarily conducted via observation and with the caregiver given this early stage in development, and typical problems encountered include social and communication difficulties, educational attainment challenges, and attachment and separation anxieties for example.

Middle Childhood and the Tweens

This age cohort has seen more focus over the past decade or so as being the manifestation age for a whole host of adult issues including eating disorders, relationship difficulties, harmful sexualised behaviours, bullying, emerging personality difficulties and early onset psychosis.  We are seeing increasing numbers of referrals of children who are experiencing psychological distress as a result of bullying via social media and exposure to adult material for example and schools who are unable to cope.

Teenager and Young Adult

If underlying mental health or psychological difficulties have not emerged prior to this age, then they are sure to make an appearance at this challenging life stage.  Aside from the enormous physical and endocrinal changes the teenager experiences, difficulties with wider relationships in the community, with work or in romantic relationships come into focus with difficulties that can include; relationships and sexual difficulties, body image, gender dysphoria, personality difficulties, mood and emotional difficulties, self-harm, and substance misuse.  Risk and safeguarding become more of an issue as this age group may fall between the net of children’s and adult services.

Adults, Couples and Families

At My Family Psychologist, we work systemically, meaning that we understand the impact mental health issues we can on others and the family system.  We offer individual and couple’s therapy, along with solution focused family therapy to help you make sense of, family dynamics, sibling rivalry, relationship difficulties, grief and loss, and trauma for example.  We also offer a full legal service for families, specialising in mediation and contact disputes, and marital and sexual difficulties.

Anxiety UK recommends the apple technique in triggering situations:

APPLE

Acknowledge the uncertainty as it comes to mind.
Pause – Don’t react as you normally do. Don’t react at all. Just pause and breath.
Pull back – Tell yourself this is just the worry talking, and this apparent need for certainty is not helpful and not necessary. It is only a thought or feeling. Don’t believe everything you think. Thoughts are not statements or facts.
Let go – Let go of the thought or feeling. It will pass. You don’t have to respond to them. You might imagine them floating away in a bubble or cloud.
Explore – Explore the present moment, because right now, in this moment, all is well. Notice your breathing and the sensations of your breathing. Notice the ground beneath you. Look around and notice what you see, what you hear, what you can touch, what you can smell. Right now. Then shift your focus of attention to something else – on what you need to do, on what you were doing before you noticed the worry, or do something else – mindfully with your full attention.
